  • Thursday, June 4, 2015 (7.00 pm-9.00 pm): Opening Ceremony – Summer School Opening Speech by Chairperson Dr Michael L Gorry, and Introduction to Our Up Coming Archaeological Survey of Crockfadda by archaeologist John Hegarty, The Exchange Buncrana. All welcome. Refreshments will be provided. Admission Free (donations welcome)
  • Friday, June 5, 2015 (6.30 pm-9.00 pm): Documentary Night at The Exchange. Join us as we watch renowned documentaries about prehistoric (‘Written in Stone’, Geological Survey of Ireland, 2005) and early medieval Ireland (‘Secrets of the Stones’, RTÉ, 2008).   • Sunday, June 7, 2015 (2.00 pm-5.00 pm): Archaeological Survey of Structures on Crockfadda Hill, Lederg. Survey led by archaeologist John Hegarty. Meeting up at Dunree Beach Car Park at 2.00 pm. All welcome. Admission Free (donations welcome)

National Theme 2015 – ‘From mill to forge, from mind to hand – discovering Irelandʼs industrial past’ 

  • Saturday, August 22, 2015 (2.00 pm-6.00 pm):  Annual WIHHS National Heritage Week Family Fun DayJoin us as we celebrate the beginning of National Heritage Week at The Exchange Buncrana/Buncrana Beach. Events include: Archaeology for Kids at Buncrana Beach led by archaeologist John Hegarty; Fun day for all the family in The Exchange featuring a whole ranges of fun events; Documentaries will be shown upstairs in The Exchange, introduced by historians Michael L Gorry and Mari McLaughlin; and various talks will take place. All welcome. Refreshments will be served. Free admission (donations welcome). Small admission charge (€2) for the Archaeology for Kids event.   • Sunday, August 23, 2015 (3.00 pm-5.00 pm): Keeping with the theme for National Heritage Week, the West Inishowen History & Heritage Society are proud to present Industrial Heritage Walk of Buncrana. Historian Lisa Henderson will lead an informative walk around Buncrana’s main 19th and early 20th century industrial heritage sites (factories, mills, etc).   • Tuesday, August 25, 2015 (4.00 pm-5.30 pm): West Inishowen History & Heritage Society in conjunction with Buncrana Community Library are proud to present Buncrana’s Industrial Heritage (talk and walk). Local historian Mari McLaughlin will lead a walk around Buncrana’s key industrial heritage sites, providing discussion and information along the way.   • Tuesday, August 25, 2015 (The Exchange, Buncrana: 7.30 pm-9.00 pm): West Inishowen and the Lough Swilly RailwayJackie Henderson will present a talk about West Inishowen and the Lough Swilly Railway that serviced the area until the mid 20th century. Relevant artefacts will be on display during the talk.   • Thursday, August 27, 2015 (The Exchange, Buncrana: 7.30 pm-9.30 pm): The Life and Hymns of Cecil Frances Alexander. Historian Michael L Gorry will deliver a talk on local hymn writer and wife of the Bishop of Derry, Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895). The talk will be followed by a live performance of her hymns by the youth choir Inis Cór, lead by Marie Fitzpatrick. Refreshments will be provided.   • Friday, August 28, 2015 (Glencrow Hall, Moville: 1.00 pm-6.00 pm):  Inishowen Early Medieval landscapes Colloquium. As part of the Lands of Eogain Festival and in conjunction with the Bernican Studies Group West Inishowen History and Heritage Society Chairperson Dr Michael Liam Gorry will give a presentation relating to the work of the society and their activities past and present and will announce future projects.   • Sunday, August 30, 2015 (Dunree Hill & St. Mura’s old graveyard Fahan: various times between 1.00 pm-2.30 pm)Seven Saints Tour – in conjunction with the Bernican Studies Group West Inishowen History and Heritage Society speakers will give talks on early monastic sites in West Inishowen on site. The first takes place at St. Mura’s old graveyard Fahan (1.00 pm) and the second at Dunree hill (approx. 1.45 pm). Join us for an afternoon of glorious scenery and informative talks about early medieval monastic sites in your area. All welcome, free event (donations welcome).   • Saturday, August 22-Sunday, August 30, 2015: Christ Church Buncrana and St. Mura’s Church of Ireland will be open for the duration of National Heritage Week for tourist visits and prayer. Come along and see two of the most historically important buildings in West Inishowen. West Inishowen History & Heritage Society will also be producing a pamphlet for visitors to Christ Church in Buncrana. Entry free of charge, donations very welcome.

  • Wednesday, September 30, 2015 (11.00 am – 2.00 pm): WIHHS subcommittee coastal field research (prehistoric site investigation: as arranged at subcommittee meeting).
  • Thursday, October 1, 2015 (The Exchange Buncrana: 7.30 pm – 9.00 pm): The Development of the Town of Buncrana (1750-1845). Local historian Larry McNutt takes us on a riveting journey through 100 years of Buncrana history. A short talk about the Folklore Commission in West Inishowen from Chairperson Dr Michael Liam Gorry, and reading of material by present day pupils from selected West Inishowen National Schools. With Dermot Quigley as your quizmaster this is sure to be a night not to be missed! Grab some buddies and a bottle or two and join us for some fun and games! Come along with your old photos (anything from the 1800s up until the present day) for a cup of tea and a chat with our local experts (oh and don’t forget your photos/paintings).
