Lough Swilly Hotel in Old Photos

On August 25, 2012 by admin

The people of Buncrana watched in shock as the Lough Swilly hotel went up in flames early on Wednesday morning. The building had fallen into a state of disrepair recently but these photos from 100 years ago show just how grand a building it was.

The hotel opened in 1867 to cater for the influx of visitors to the seaside town after the extension of the railway from Derry into Inishowen. It welcomed royalty in its time (including a visit by Queen Victoria) and was a central tourist spot for the town until its closure. Perhaps the phoenix from the flames will be a renewed interest in the massive tourist potential of the site.
